ACRYLICS Acrylic paint is a very versatile medium. It can be used in thin washes like watercolors or in thicker strokes similar to oils but with a quicker drying time. Acrylic painting introduces the beginning art student to the basics from how to handle the paint and its tools to introducing techniques used by professional artists to produce beautiful paintings. Subjects range from traditional landscapes to funky still life and modern art. WATERCOLORS Watercolor is delightful, fresh, exciting, messy, delicate and tender, all at the same time. It is an enormously popular painting medium and has been since the nineteenth century. The most brilliant quality of watercolors is transparency and in this workshop students will learn how to use it in their watercolor paintings. We will learn how to use the palette, how to mix color in order to have the right shade, and a lot about brushes and brushstrokes. In this workshop we will learn a lot about composition, light and form, tonal painting, and negative space.
HUMOR IN ART! Have you ever heard someone say to you ‘what a beautiful upside down cake?’ Ever wonder what they are talking about? Sometimes words can say one thing but mean something else. In this workshop we are going to take those words and show people what they should mean. We will draw pictures of a glass fish or a turtle dove the way we think they should look. We will explore funny phrases and see what other funny pictures we can come up with.
HERE BE DRAGONS! In this workshop campers learn how to draw fantasy creatures. Eastern and western dragons, unicorns, gryphon, elves, faeries, and other creatures. We will use pencil, marker and colored pencils for the final works of art in this class.
FANTASY ART Many self-taught artists create their own private worlds. Henry Darger developed a fantasy tale between good and evil forces. Joseph Cornell made a Crystal Palace and a Ballerina Theatre, while Grandma Moses painted an Apple Butter Party. We will make our own worlds inspired by these artists and many more. Different techniques will be used such as paint, collage and assemblage.
PASTEL PERFECTION! In this workshop campers will learn basic principles of color as well as pastel blending to execute a series of projects including landscapes, still-lifes, and animals. They will learn about shading, proportion, volume, texture, and composition.We will look at the Master’s such as Degas and Monet, Matisse, Picasso, to name a few. Pastels are all about light and movement.
STORYBOOK ILLUSTRATION Ever wondered how author’s of books like Give a Mouse a Muffin or the Grouchy Ladybug create their beautiful books. Do you have an idea you would like to turn into a storybook full of beautiful drawings? This is your workshop. Come and learn how to make full page illustrations to tell a story.
ANIMAL DRAWING Campers will learn to draw and paint their favorite animals from dogs and cats to icky toads and snakes through the use of color, shading, composition, and perspective. In this workshop campers will utilize colored pencils, markers, and blending stubs.....sponging, spattering, and soft wash techniques to produce a series of masterpieces as they create animals in a whole new light.
IT’S A PUZZLE Do you know how to put together a puzzle? Have you every wanted to make your own puzzle? In this workshop you can learn techniques for putting together a puzzle quickly without even looking at the picture. Then you get to create your own puzzle to take home and show your new skills off. We will use markers, crayons and colored pencils to vividly color our own drawings to bring them to life.

STORY TELLERS In this wrokshop you will get to create your own short story and then illustrate it yourselves. You will make a book as your final project, typed text and hand drawn illustrations. We will use pencil, marker, crayon and colored pencil to create our final work of art.
AFRICAN EMBROIDERY PLUS Experience Africa by learning about the history and culture of the Ndebele Tribe in South Africa. This class combines 2 fun activities. First you will learn all the cool stitches and beadwork to create an original African Embroidery art piece. Then you will use the sewing machine and make your artwork into a fantastic pillow or tote bag!

MUMMIES OF EGYPT For thousands of years, Egyptians were ceremoniously enshrined and their stories told through elaborate art surrounding their mummies. Each camper will create an ancient Egyptian, we’ll weave their life story, imagine how they looked, and what they did during their lifetime. We’ll go through the mummification process with papier-mâché, and paint a sarcophagus that tells their story. Campers can travel back to ancient times to a land of mystery and beauty in this class.
WORLDFEST MULTIMEDIA Discover the art of WorldFest! Unusual art pieces derived from festivals around the world. You’ll draw, sculpt, paint and create in all kinds of art materials. Enjoy the festivities, art, music and culture of WorldFest, where every class is a party!
FOLK ART Folk Art is the art of the people. Throughout history artists, adults and children celebrated life through folk art. The tradition continues today, all you need is to expess yourself and remain true to your heart. You don't need to learn how to "make art", the gift is already inside you and cannot be taught. Find your own language, bdance your own dance and use this class to do it. Children will make a Voodoo flag, a hindu elephant, a mexican pinata, a chinese lantern plus more.
NATIVE AMERICAN ART The lives of the Native Americans of the southwest were captured in their artwork, which features the resources of the land, and how they used them. Gain some insight into Native American cultures by working on some projects inspired by traditional crafts. Campers will use natural inspirations to make Hopi Kachina dancing figures, Rainsticks, rattles, and weave Dreamcatchers at our Valley Village campus and Plains Indian beaded pouch, Haida totem poles and Plains Indians beaded bags at our Agoura Campus. Each project will tell the story of this great culture, and how they used these items in their everyday life.
WOODWORKING*
CREATIONS IN CLAY In this ceramic workshop we will study the styles of well known artists and then create our own unique variations in clay. Henry Moore, Georgia Okeefe, and Alexander Caulder are just a few of the artists that will be our inspiration as we create wonderful projects. At our Valley Village campus our projects will be inspired by studying the Arts of Asia along with examining several well known American and European Artists. Different glazes and techniques will be incorporated into this workshop.
MOSAIC MANIA! Stunning mosaic art projects are created using special materials. Glass, paper and untraditional materials get worked into fabulous mosaic creations. Let your inner artist go totally mosaic crazy! *KID-SAFE - No grout, sharp-edged glass or toxic materials are used in this workshop.

CERAMICS Clay is an exciting and magical material. In ceramics class children will learn the art and craft of clay while having fun and exploring their creativity. Ceramics is a unique pottery program offering a total hands-on experience while learning the techniques of shaping clay into Pinch Pots, designing and constructing Slab Projects, building unique Coil Vessels, Clay Decoration, and Glazing. Come learn the art and craft of clay, pottery has something enjoyable and challenging to offer for everyone. Your dishes will be lead free and safe to eat and drink from.
BEGINNING SEWING/QUILTING This is a perfect class for anyone who wants to learn to sew using a sewing machine. You will learn the sewing basics, how to read a pattern, what’s the best fabric to choose for your project and more. You will be able to make a lap quilt or a useful and stylish quilted tote bag. (Must be 8 years old)
SUMMER SPA Get in tune with nature as we learn to make fun and fragrant projects like bath teas, body lotion, molded soaps, candles and potpourri. This doesn’t have to be a girly class; boys can create creepy goop, herbal soaps, gifts for mom, and everyone will love the chocolate face mask! We’ll set aside time for spa-like activities like foot scrubs and body glitter make-overs. We’ll use natural ingredients like citrus and honey, and some even right out of the Art Camp garden like lavender and mint. Campers will leave with a special Spa Recipe booklet, as well as project samples to share with their friends and family.
ART IN THE GARDEN Nature is an open canvas as we design growing art creations to take home. Gardening can be a lifelong hobby, when you develop a connection to the natural world outside your home. Campers will learn how different plants develop and grow by tending our indoor and outdoor gardens, as well as feeding the neighborhood hummingbirds. We’ll plant seeds, root cuttings, and even hybridize roses! We’ll work with dried and pressed flowers, and have a tea party of various herbs grown in our garden. Campers will find the art of gardening, as well as art in the garden in this workshop!
SCULPTURE WORKS STUDIO Awesome Art! Super Sculptures! And tons of FUN! Work with loads of different and unexpected materials in this multi-media workshop that will have you creating, building and making your very own amazing “Sculpture Works"; your own fun, usable and very cool artworks.
FASHION EMBELLISHMENT Take your boring clothes and make them fabulous! You will be sewing by hand and machine to add fabric, trim, lace, ribbons and more to the clothes that you bring. Some sewing experience necessary. (Must be 8 years old)
CLASSIC ALBUM COVER ART Art and music have always had a strong connection, especially in the day of the classic album cover. During this class, we’ll listen to some classic rock and pop music and be inspired from the original album cover art to create interpretations in mixed media, including photography, collage, computer graphics, and pastels. Some of the album artists we’ll be inspired by include The Beatles, Elton John, Queen, Bruce Springsteen, and U2. We may even break out the ole’ turntable and hear an album the way it should be enjoyed! BOARD GAMES Have you ever wanted to create your own board game like Monopoly, Candy Land or Clue? Now’s your chance! PUPPET THEATRE Do you love making your favorite stories come to life? Throughout the entire history of humankind, people have made and used puppets to tell stories. In this class, campers will explore the art of storytelling through shadow puppets, finger puppets, hand shadows, and their very own creations! The workshop will conclude with a performance of The Art Academy Puppet Masters where you can show off your puppetry skills!
MAKING MINIATURES Do you love to look at dollhouse miniatures? In this class you will be making amazing miniature furniture, food and toys and more. Your creations will be used on cards, gifts or to decorate a dollhouse room.
MUSICAL THEATRE
THEATRE-IMPROV Improv games and theatre fun, students will learn how to set the scene and interact with one another during improv sketches, then will develop an arsenal of characters to unleash upon the audience in the final sketch performance!
IMPROV ACTING Ever wanted to know the techniques of the actors on shows like Who's Line is it Anyway, Saturday Night Live, and Mad TV? Now you can! This fun filled workshop will delve into the world of situational and improvisational comedy. Play fun games and act in skits with your fellow campers. Funny characters, silly voices, and the ability to think on your toes is not only allowed, but encouraged! The workshop will conclude with a performance where you can show off your Improv skills to your parents and friends!
MASTERS OF DISGUISE: STAGE MAKE-UP!
This fun-filled course focuses on communicating character to the audience through makeup. Students learn basics of stage makeup, including use of color, aging techniques, cuts, scars, bruises, dog and cat faces, clown make-up, skull face paint application, and fantasy! Campers can expect to learn a different technique everyday! Your friends and parents might not even recognize you by the end of the day! At the conclusion of the workshop, each camper will receive a personal photo album documenting all your transformations into the world of stage make-up!
DRAMATIC DRAMA! All the world is a stage! Especially at the Art Academy! This workshop explores the world of theatre incorporating comedy, drama, and character development! Campers can expect to play fun drama games emphasizing acting, pantomime, improvisation, scene building, and story telling. The workshop will conclude with a performance of an original play written just for you! The audience will all think you're going to be the next big movie star!
TREASURE PIRATES Aaaaaaaargh! Have ye ever dreamt of becoming an actual Pirate of the 7 1/2 seas? Well here be ye chance mateys! Ye be joining Mystery Mike (aka: Captain Big Mouth) where ye be learning all ye need to be making ye one of the greatest pirates of all time. You'll learn to walk, talk and of course 'sing' like a pirate. There be 'plank walking' as well other "Pirate Games" that we be playing on the ship. And ye also be creating ye very own Pirate "name" that works for you (keep in mind, it's always 3 words ie: Captain Big Mouth...Captain Blue Beard, etc...)Ye also will be learning how to navigate through the waters and how the Pirates of the past did this too. And you'll be learning the real history of the Pirates of the past. Did ye be knowing that Pirates used dolphins, turtles and albatross' (a really big bird) to find their way to their treasures along with their compass? Ye be learning how to use a compass, create your own treasure maps and build your own treasure chest to fill on an actual Treasure Hunt at the end of the course with all kinds of Pirate Treasure. The only course requirement is that ye must speak Pirate (ye will be taught if ye don't know how) and have a desire to find treasure wherever you go. Aaaaaaaaargh! SECRET AGENT TRAINING Learn to be a Secret Agent with Mystery Mike, the most famous goofy, wacky Secret Agent known by children all over the country. Join Mystery Mike as he takes you through the actual process with Spy Challenges, Map Making, Various Disguises, Spy Gadgets, Learning Accents, learning to create and decipher secret codes, clue writing and more. The course ends with a campus Scavenger Hunt that the children put together themselves using all of their 'Agent' training throughout the course. EN GUARD! FENCING Touche! This workshop will introduce campers to the ancient, elegant sport of Epee fencing, in which opponents salute, go on guard and sustain an intense yet graceful dialogue through their gestures and weapons. Classes will cover footwork, blade work, strategy, training drills and exercises. Beginning fencers will parrie, thrust, lunge and bout, while learning the etiquette and the strategies of this fun, safe sport. You must be 8 years old or older to take this workshop.
VOICE ACADEMY This is no reality show! Here, campers can learn the basic skills to sing. Proper warm- ups, visual aids for breathing exercises, breath control, harmonizing, costumes, set design, proper eating habits for singers...all are essential to creating a great sound. Session One: MWF THE BEATLES- Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. Based loosely on the Vegas show entitled “LOVE”. The children will get to experience the musical dynasty of the Fab Four. Session One: T/TH Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Part 1: As seen on HBO, the 35th anniversary of the Hall of fame will come to life with performance by Bruce Springsteen, Patty Smith, Simon and Garfunkel. Session One: MWF THE BEATLES- The Yellow Submarine. Featuring different music still based upon the Vegas show, “LOVE”. Another look at the music that changed a generation and made the Fab Four the international superstars they had become. Session One: T/TH Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Part 2: Based upon the 6 hour concert on HBO, this time around, will feature artists such as U2, Rolling Stones and Aretha Franklin.
YOGA In this workshop, we’ll explore and discover the mind and body in inspiring, creative ways. Through animated poses, basic stretching and movement exercises, you’ll gain strength, flexibility, coordination and body awareness. Breathing and visualization techniques will teach you how to concentrate, relax and focus inward. The aim of the workshop is to stimulate the imagination, promote creative self-expression, instill self-respect and respect for others, and release energy. A typical class includes Breath Awareness, Sun Salutations, Standing and Sitting Poses, Stretching, and Relaxation. The integration of art, yoga games, and music add to the fun and adventure of this ancient practice. CAPOEIRA Capoeira is a Brazilian dance-martial art, developed by slaves to fight the oppression of their masters. Capoeira is the perfect balance between self-defense and rhythm. In this workshop, our campers will develop their flexibility, confidence, cardio-vascular endurance, range of motion, rhythm, awareness of themselves and others and will have a great time doing it! This workshop incorporates learning different Brazilian percussion instruments, singing, acrobatics, and fight-like moves ending with a performance at the end of the session. TAE KWON DO This workshop will teach campers self-defense (including blocks, kicks, punches and moves to protect themselves), discipline, and respect - for their teacher, their elders, and themselves. Workshops will include insight into Korean culture, the history of Tae Kwon Do and even the Korean language. We'll even play FUN martial arts games where campers can show off what they've learned - all in a safe environment! We'll end with a fun demonstration for all the parents - ALWAYS a crowd pleaser! DANCE-POP STARZ With classic pop tunes, from Madonna to Miley, Pop Starz is all about performance! Students will learn songs and hip-hop-style dances then develop a pop star persona, culminating in a high-energy live concert event. DRUM CIRCLE In this workshop students will be inspired to express themselves freely through the art of music, bringing the rhythm of drum to their hearts. They will learn different types of pattern you can create: through feeling, spirit, music and power of “Thunder of Rhythm.” They will discover the spirit of music and laughter that comes from within through a high energy Drum Circle we will create using amazing drums and various percussion. They will also learn the importance of the drum in different cultures and how powerful its beat can be, to unite people in the world. 50’s CAFE In this class we're going to travel back in time to a 50's diner and learn how to make delicious classic dishes like a fancy grilled cheese sandwich, mouthwatering cheeseburger, onion rings, milkshakes, and chicken fried steak all while we listen to classic Wolfman Jack himself and good old Rock'n'Roll.
CHOCOLATE EXTRAVAGANZA Come learn the History of beautiful and delicious Chocolate. We will be making a Chocolate Centerpiece project to showcase your chocolate talent. Learn how to melt, pour and form this delicious gift from the Mayans into treats that Mr. Hershey would be proud of.
COOKIES, BROWNIES, MUFFINS AND MORE! This workshop will look at a variety of classic French baking techniques and why we use them. Creaming butter and using leavening agents are featured concepts in this class. We will make a variety of cookies including rolled and cutout varieties plus we will have an experiment of cake-like versus fudge-like brownies. Yum Yum!
BLAST OFF BREAKFAST Surprise Mom and Dad with a delicious breakfast in bed after they have worked hard all week. Learn how to make blintzes, waffles, pancakes, eggs, potatoes and breakfast meats in this class that will give you all the skills needed to prepare a yummy breakfast.
THE ART OF BAKING Get your hands in the flour, sugar and butter as we explore classic French baking techniques to make delicious sweet treats like cookies, cupcakes, and muffins from scratch. We also visit the savory side of baking with delicious quick breads and of course...........homemade Calzone!!!
CARNIVAL TREATS Take a road trip down to the county fair this summer, we'll be cooking the same delicious food you find at the county fair, so good you could say it's award winning. We're going to dip our hands and make a giant pizza carnival size pizza, funnel cake, barbecue, honey glazed turkey leg, and nacho cheese fries, Yum Yum!
FANTASTIC SNACKS This delicious class will teach you recipes that are easy and tasty. After a hard day at school nothing is better than making yourself a simple snack to nibble on before dinner. Recipes include homemade trail mix, pinwheels, nachos, deviled eggs, crostini and quesadillas.
CARTOONING - CLASSIC MOVIE MONSTERS
CARTOONING - SUPERHEROES VS. SUPERVILLIANS Always wanted to create and draw your own classic comic battles between good and evil, then be ready to create your own SUPERHERO & SUPERVILLAIN adventures! Learn the history, the super powers, and draw the most dynamic characters as they were originally rendered in dynamic comic book fashion. The basics of character design, proportion, and perspective will be used to develop a collection of daily entries and short comic book panel action sequences. Sketch warp speed in the MILLENIUM FALCON and illustrate the voyage of the STARSHIP ENTERPRISE! CARTOONING - ANIME’ Do you wish you knew how to create ANIME style characters? What about ANIME' inspired American cartoons like the TEEN TITANS and STAR WARS CLONE WARS? Learn the exciting techniques and ideas behind the popular Anime style! We will study the art of famous Anime style artists Genndy Tartakovsky (Samauri Jack & Clone Wars) and Akira Toriyama (Dragon Ball Z) and create our own Anime-inspired characters.
CARTOONING - SCI-FI ALIENS We come in peace! Or do they? Are you ready for the alien invasion or would you rather hang on the wall of the slimy JABBA the HUTT. Explore the vast and creative world of SCI-FI ALIENS. We will study some of the most imaginative, creepy, and just plain weird nature of ALIEN design. Sketch classic SCI-FI ALIENS including GORT (THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL), and be ready for the hunt with the PREDATOR! We will also examine the some of the best Sci-Fi movies of popular directors like George Lucas and Steven Spielberg that have opened our imagination to worlds beyond ours.
CARD TRICKS & SLEIGHT OF HAND This workshop is going to cover a whole bunch of magic dealing with cards! We will learn magic with a regular deck of cards as well as "magic decks" of cards! We will cover all the basics of close-up magic! Not only will card tricks be taught but rope tricks and MIND READING TRICKS! That's right, you will LEAN HOW TO READ MINDS in this class! Everyone will get to keep every trick that is taught AND have their own personalized magic book with instructions and drawings! Plus we will twist and tie balloon animals AND watch some AMAZING magic on DVD!
MAGIC: THE ART OF ASTONISHMENT When you see an amazing trick or illusion, don't you want to see it again, figure it out, or ask how it's done? We all know that a magician never tells — except at The Summer Art Academy, that is. We will learn magic that will amaze everyone! Everyone will get to keep every trick that is taught AND have their own personalized magic book with instructions and drawings! We will learn magic with numbers, coins, cards and many other easy to use props! If you have taken our magic workshops before, that's OK because we will learn some BRAND NEW MAGIC as well as review some of the classics. At the end of the workshop we will watch magic on DVD with some of the world's most famous magicians! MAGIC AND MIND READING For those kids who might already know a thing or two, this course will teach magic tricks involving sleight-of-hand, magic theory and even MIND READING! Many of these tricks Micah uses in his current, professional repertoire! And the kids will get to keep all the tricks they learn! Just like Beginning Magic, we'll end with a fun demonstration for all the parents!
CHESS CLUB: FAST ATTACKS AND COOL COMBOS! How fast can you attack a chess opponent??!! Cool combos like the Seesaw, the Snakebite, the Shark Attack, and the worst one of all? The Little Minnow!! Each class has a lesson for beginners, a lesson for intermediate/advanced, and playing time for everybody!
HOCUS POCUS Cards, cards, and more cards! Students will learn classic card magic principles that will fry the minds of their spectators! A large emphasis is placed on the theatrical side of magic. As to make their tricks become little show pieces of magic. This summer turn yourself from a Card newbie to a Card Shark!!
ART PHOTOGRAPHY Combining photography with additional media makes this workshop both educational and fun! We cover all the basics of camera usage, as well as composition, color, light, shape, and texture. Creativity knows no bounds though as we use the photos taken by the kids to compose masterpieces including color added to black and white photos, Pop Art inspired grids, fractured perspectives, and “Fish Eye” portraits. This enables each student to learn and play at his/her own pace. MINDSTORMS LEGO ROBOTICS In this exciting workshop, become Mechanical Masters in the Robot Revolution! After a brief introduction to the ideas behind robots and robotics, such as input, output, and engineering, campers will get the chance to build their own Lego robot and bring their own electronic creature to life! Using the latest Lego robotics kits, teams will learn how to program the robot to both carry out commands and respond to its surroundings. Younger campers will work with modular components so they can get right to work, while older campers have the opportunity to focus more on individual design and more advanced program functions for their robots. Every student will have the opportunity to show off their new skills!
GAMING Video Games, video games, video games! Everybody has played games on their home consoles, but computer gaming combines the latest technologies with networking to play against each other right in the lab! Tune in for updates on the games, and sign up early, because this one is a winner! Worskhops for both young and older campers!
POSTERIZE IT! Learn to use the most exciting art programs on the computer! Photos, Digital Painting, Scanning, and Clip Art are all tools at your disposal in this fun-filled poster project. Older campers will learn programs such as Photoshop or Illustrator, while Microsoft Paint lets younger ones make the elements for their project. While campers create their own posters, they learn to use Publishing software to assemble all of the elements together. Everyone will get to create a travel, movie or rock band poster, even advertisements for their own imaginary companies. At the end of the session, each student will choose which of their designs will be printed up as jumbo-size poster!
XIPSTER VIDEO ANIMATION Computer animation is a blast in this hip, Xip class! Stop Motion Animation using claymation, legos, shockinis, whiteboarding, and cutouts!! Each student receives a DVD of their work at the end of the session and a Xipster FilmFest will take place at the end of the workshop!
DIGITAL DEFENDERS Top-secret information is leaking onto the internet. The culprit? The top-secret information itself! This augmented reality game is tied to an upcoming major book release. Your team of wily investigators will race against the clock to stop the artificial intelligence from wreaking Internet havoc. Using the internet and mobile devices, Tech Team Alpha will have to utilize all of their wits and ingenuity to defeat the malicious super-virus. Be prepared. Anything can happen! Explore the fascinating world of solving mysteries and develop observation and reasoning skills.
THE "BIG CHEESE" PRESS EXTRA! EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT IT! The Big Cheese Press swings into production, and the big news is you! Campers in this workshop will design and develop a camp newsletter, documenting the activities, people, and summer fun at camp. Several issues will be produced this summer, allowing everyone the opportunity to use their talents while learning about designing storyboards and layouts. It’s a group effort to see their project through production, and nothing stops the presses at the BIG CHEESE PRESS!
PAPER MACHE CREATIONS Gargoyles! Sea Serpents! Griffins! You name it, we can probably build it in this workshop. Campers will see their sketch of a creature of their choosing on paper transform into a three dimensional version made from paper mache. Learn how to make teeth, talons, spines, even wings and attach them to the main form. Texture and paint will be added at the end to make the project look as "real" as possible.
MIX IT UP!
PASTELS! In this workshop campers will learn basic principles of color as well as pastel blending to execute a series of projects including landscapes, still-lifes, and animals. They will learn about shading, proportion, volume, texture, and composition. We will look at artists such as Cezanne, Kandinsky, Thiebaud and Dine to name a few. Pastels are all about light and movement.
THE MASTERS IN MIXED MEDIA While exploring various artists and the wide range of materials they use, we will go beyond just using one traditional media. Mixing media gives an art piece depth, makes it one of a kind and flat becomes alive and dimensional. By using a variety, you can go beyond being conventional and realize the Sky's the limit in creating a work of art. We will be exploring Monet, Vasarely, Pollock and Seurat just to name a few! There are no mistakes in art, explore, create and most of all have fun.
SCULPEY CREATIONS Have a great time learning how to use this pliable clay to create your favorite animals and cartoon characters. You will paint your creations with acrylics. This is a wonderful and fun class as you learn how to transfer your 2D drawings to 3D sculptures.
COLOR ME CREATIVE So...you only have red, yellow, blue, black and white paints and you want to paint a summer beach scene? How do you make the color of the sand? Hmmm...try some white mixed with that yellow. EEESH, too bright!! ...this is not right at ALL!! So NOW what? OK...maybe add a little black. Oh...NO, green sand? !! This will never do! ART MASTERS OF THE GARDEN Your child will tend indoor and outdoor gardens of vibrant flowers, aromatic herbs and exotic teas. We will draw and paint in the garden using techniques of various art masters. Harvest some of our bounty to concoct natural paints and dyes. Learn the ingredients that Mother Nature uses to mix up her delicious batch of beauty in this world! Art, History, Botany, Ecology and Geometry lessons will last a lifetime!
AFRICAN FOLKLORE EMBROIDERY Take a visual safari through Africa with African Folklore Embroidery. Learn beading and stitching as you learn about African wildlife and tribal arts. The rules of African Folklore Embroidery are simple, Whatever color you choose to stitch is the right color, your stitches do not need to be perfect! Children will remember the basic sewing they learn including running stitch, bead applique and quilters knot for ever!
SCRAPBOOKING Learn the basics of scrapbooking and the tools used to complete many different pages. Using decorative scissors, paper and more, we will create a variety of pages to ensure a lifetime of memories. Topics covered include cropping, mounting, creative lettering, designing a layout, matching colors and journaling. The workshop atmosphere is very fun and relaxed with music in the background and everyone chatting about their happy memories. Students will use approximately 3-5 photos each day so start taking pictures now and be sure to bring them on the first day of class.
PARTY TIME! This is a new one for our older campers. In this work shop we check out how and why kids and communities around the world have parties. From America’s Independence Day to Mexico's tradition of piñatas to celebrating the New Year like they do in China and Thailand, we try to experience the best parties from across the globe. Come to this party to build, make and have fun!
PET PROJECTS If you love your pets, then this workshop is for you. In this class we will make and decorate different items you can take home and have for your pet. We will use some recycled items, learn how to decoupage, paint a little. Every class will be different and you will end up with some great stuff for your loving pets at home.
ANCIENT EGYPTIAN TREASURES Step way back in time and make things from Ancient Egypt. Carve amulets, make a sarcophagus, brush up on your hieroglyphics, learn about the gods and tales of Ancient Egypt plus do a few other projects we can "dig" up. Cool fun in the hot summer sun.
PUPPETS AND PLAYS Campers will organize an entire puppet production in this class. They will start by writing a play, then design a stage and make a variety of puppets and props in order for them to act out their story. Lots of room for imagination, creativity and practical planning as they put all this together in an amazing hand puppet show!
CERAMICS Clay is an exciting and magical material. In ceramics class children will learn the art and craft of clay while having fun and exploring their creativity. Ceramics is a unique pottery program offering a total hands-on experience while learning the techniques of shaping clay into Pinch Pots, designing and constructing Slab Projects, building unique Coil Vessels, Clay Decoration, and Glazing. Come learn the art and craft of clay, pottery has something enjoyable and challenging to offer for everyone. Your dishes will be lead free and safe to eat and drink from.
YOUNG SPROUTS IN THE GARDEN Pick and Sow with Picasso, grow with Michaelangelo and Veg. with Van Gogh! Your young sprout will tend indoor and outdoor gardens. Learn to draw and paint with the art masters using their own garden as inspiration. Lessons in Art, Nature, Math and Nutrition too! This class will nurture a love of nature and art that will last a lifetime!
MUSICAL THEATRE Dance: Pop Starz: With classic pop tunes, from Madonna to Miley, Pop Starz is all about performance! Students will learn songs and dances then develop a pop star persona, culminating in a high-energy live concert event. Wild, Wild West: Put on your cowboy boots and hold onto your horses because WILD WILD WEST takes the best from Western musicals (including OKLAHOMA and SEVEN BRIDES). Throw in some villainous characters and action sequences and you have a lawless musical that makes its own rules. This class will include singing, dancing, acting, and a stunt or two, as children will be cast in a role and rehearsals will culminate in a performance. Session Two:
THE MASTERS OF DISGUISE: STAGE MAKEUP This fun-filled course focuses on communicating character to the audience through makeup. Students learn basics of stage makeup, including use of color, aging techniques, cuts, scars, bruises, dog and cat faces, clown make-up, skull face paint application, and fantasy! Campers can expect to learn a different technique everyday! Your friends and parents might not even recognize you by the end of the day! At the conclusion of the workshop, each camper will receive a personal photo album documenting all your transformations into the world of stage make-up!
DRAMATIC DRAMA! All the world is a stage! Especially at the Art Academy! This workshop explores the world of theatre incorporating comedy, drama, and character development! Campers can expect to play fun drama games emphasizing acting, pantomime, improvisation, scene building, and story telling. The workshop will conclude with a performance of an original play written just for you! The audience will all think you're going to be the next big movie star!
TREASURE PIRATES Aaaaaaaargh! Have ye ever dreamt of becoming an actual Pirate of the 7 1/2 seas? Well here be ye chance mateys! Ye be joining Mystery Mike (aka: Captain Big Mouth) where ye be learning all ye need to be making ye one of the greatest pirates of all time. You'll learn to walk, talk and of course 'sing' like a pirate. There be 'plank walking' as well other "Pirate Games" that we be playing on the ship. And ye also be creating ye very own Pirate "name" that works for you (keep in mind, it's always 3 words ie: Captain Big Mouth...Captain Blue Beard, etc...)Ye also will be learning how to navigate through the waters and how the Pirates of the past did this too. And you'll be learning the real history of the Pirates of the past. Did ye be knowing that Pirates used dolphins, turtles and albatross' (a really big bird) to find their way to their treasures along with their compass? Ye be learning how to use a compass, create your own treasure maps and build your own treasure chest to fill on an actual Treasure Hunt at the end of the course with all kinds of Pirate Treasure. The only course requirement is that ye must speak Pirate (ye will be taught if ye don't know how) and have a desire to find treasure wherever you go. Aaaaaaaaargh! See ye all there and be prepared to Aaaaaaaaargh!
SECRET AGENT TRAINING Learn to be a Secret Agent with Mystery Mike, the most famous goofy, wacky Secret Agent known by children all over the country. Join Mystery Mike as he takes you through the actual process with Spy Challenges, Map Making, Various Disguises, Spy Gadgets, Learning Accents, learning to create and decipher secret codes, clue writing and more. The course ends with a campus Scavenger Hunt that the children put together themselves using all of their 'Agent' training throughout the course. Each child also receives a 'dossier' at the end that includes digital photos of themselves from the course, an official 'Spy Certification' as well as some other 'mysterious' surprises.Looking foward to helping you 'find a clue' to become a great Secret Agent.

LET'S DANCE Our young dancers will be introduced to the basic understanding of dance. Classes will be directed towards proper warm up, technique, and a choreographed routine based upon a current or past song. This summer's course will also infuse a variety if dance culture, featuring, modern jazz, and hip hop dance styles. Dancers will have an opportunity to participate in the creative process and learn elements of choreography.
JAZZ DANCE Campers will be introduced to basic dance technique. Warm-ups, stretching, floor exercises, and across the floor patterns will be included in the class. Dancers will have an opportunity to choreograph movement patterns and build their performance quality.

CHEER SQUAD Campers will form the Art Camp’s own CHEER SQUAD! They will learn everything from basic clapping techniques, to more advanced pep rally cheers, and even dance! Warm-ups, stretching, floor exercises, stunts and across the floor patterns will be included in the class. The class will end with a FANTASTIC cheerleading performance!
EN GUARD! FENCING Touche! This workshop will introduce campers to the ancient, elegant sport of Epee fencing, in which opponents salute, go on guard and sustain an intense yet graceful dialogue through their gestures and weapons. Classes will cover footwork, blade work, strategy, training drills and exercises. Beginning fencers will parrie, thrust, lunge and bout, while learning the etiquette and the strategies of this fun, safe sport. You must be 8 years old or older to take this workshop.
YOGA In this workshop, we’ll explore and discover the mind and body in inspiring, creative ways. Through animated poses, basic stretching and movement exercises, you’ll gain strength, flexibility, coordination and body awareness. Breathing and visualization techniques will teach you how to concentrate, relax and focus inward. The aim of the workshop is to stimulate the imagination, promote creative self-expression, instill self-respect and respect for others, and release energy. A typical class includes Breath Awareness, Sun Salutations, Standing and Sitting Poses, Stretching, and Relaxation. The integration of art, yoga games, and music add to the fun and adventure of this ancient practice. MARTIAL ARTS - TANG SOO DO Tang Soo Do is a style of Korean martial arts, or karate, which is the study of self defense with a weapon-less hand. In this workshop, our campers will enjoy taking karate, which can be applied to many areas in life including self dicipline and self control, goal achievement, mental clarity and above all else the confidence to over come any situation one desires! Our program will include, but is not limited to, the learning of basic kicks, punches, blocks and stances, a form (also known as a kata), attacking combinations, and karate games designed to be extremely fun while focusing on needed aspects such as hand-eye coordination and balance. This workshop will use positive reinforcement to motivate and connect with children so that this program becomes a fun, safe, and highly beneficial environment. There will be a performance, by all of the children attending this workshop, at the end of the session giving them a chance to show off their newly discovered martial arts talents! Each camper will get their own uniform to take home!

This is an extremely fun class which engages our campers imagination as well as technical skills.

MAGIC: THE ART OF ASTONISHMENT When you see an amazing trick or illusion, don't you want to see it again, figure it out, or ask how it's done? We all know that a magician never tells — except at The Summer Art Academy, that is. We will learn magic that will amaze everyone! Everyone will get to keep every trick that is taught AND have their own personalized magic book with instructions and drawings! We will learn magic with numbers, coins, cards and many other easy to use props! If you have taken our magic workshops before, that's OK because we will learn some BRAND NEW MAGIC as well as review some of the classics. At the end of the workshop we will watch magic on DVD with some of the world's most famous magicians! Throughout this workshop we will have some GREAT non-magic surprises like card tossing, balloon sculpting and more!
WIZARD SCHOOL Learn the basics to the most challenging type of magic, close-up sleight of hand. Students will learn beginning sleight of hand with everyday objects such as coins, cards, pencils etc. that is guaranteed to mystify. In the process they will learn skills that will open up the doors to a lifetime of magic!
HOCUS POCUS Cards, cards, and more cards! In this magic workshop you will learn classic card magic principles that will fry the minds of your spectators! A large emphasis is placed on the theatrical side of magic. As to make your tricks become little show pieces of magic. This summer turn yourself from a Card newbie to a Card Shark!!
DIGITAL PHOTO In this workshop we begin by learning the basics of Adobe Photoshop and Web Image Searches by editing photos and images you will search for and download from web. After familiarizing yourselves with the software, you will continue to learn more advanced functions of the program in addition to taking your own photographs around camp. These photographs will then be downloaded into the computers so you will have an opportunity to manipulate your own photos using Photoshop.

ROBOTICS: A Hands-On Earth/Space Building Experience!* In this workshop, the ROBOTIX experience is shared by all campers and allows them to learn organization, teamwork as well as the development of goals and objectives. Each camper will have a complete array of ROBOTIX Parts available to build ROBOTIX Vehicles and Creatures. BattleBot and Task Competitions are an integral part of the overall workshop experience. ROBOTIX was created in 1983 by Milton-Bradley and is a Hands-On, Space-Age, Motorized, Modular Building System that Neal has geared in his workshops using both California and National Science Standards to assist campers of all ages to create, be educated and be entertained. This is a great experience for your camper! Parents...complete ROBOTIX kits to take home are available to purchase as well, ask instructor or visit ROBOTIX website at www.roboticsandthings.com. *Parents, this a two block workshop, if you sign up for the 9:00a workshop you must also take the 10:35a workshop.
