WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS
FOR VALLEY VILLAGE AND AGOURA HILLS

The Art Camp offers workshops that foster new ways of thinking, seeing and doing. All workshops are co-ed with approximately 15-16 children per class. Each workshop has one teacher and one workshop assistant. Our Theatre Arts, Music and Movement workshops may be somewhat larger. The mobile woodworking bus is limited to 10 children per workshop, so sign up early.


V I S U A LA R T S

ACRYLIC PAINTING
Acrylic paint is a very versatile medium. It can be used in thin washes like watercolors or in thicker strokes similar to oils but with a quicker drying time. Acrylic painting introduces the beginning art student to the basics from how to handle the paint and its tools to introducing techniques used by professional artists to produce beautiful paintings. Subjects include landscapes, still life and a variety of animals portraits.

WATERCOLOR
Watercolor is delightful, fresh, exciting, messy, delicate and tender, all at the same time. It is an enormously popular painting medium and has been since the nineteenth century. The most brilliant quality of watercolors is transparency and in this workshop students will learn how to use it in their watercolor paintings. We will learn how to use the palette, how to mix color in order to have the right shade, and a lot about brushes and brushstrokes. In this workshop we will learn a lot about composition, light and form, tonal painting, and negative space.

PASTEL TECHNIQUES
In this workshop campers will learn basic principles of color as well as pastel blending to execute a series of projects including landscapes, still-lifes, and animals.  They will learn about shading, proportion, volume, texture, and composition. At our Valley Village campus we will look at the Master’s such as Degas and Monet. Pastels are all about Light and movement.

THE MASTERS IN MIXED MEDIA
While exploring various artists and the wide range of materials they use, we will go beyond just using one traditional media. Mixing media gives an art piece depth, makes it one of a kind and flat becomes alive and dimensional. By using a variety, you can go beyond being conventional and realize the skies the limit in creating a work of art. We will be exploring Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Georgia O'Keeffe, Claude Monet, just to name a few! Their are no mistakes in art, explore, create and most of all have fun.

ANIMAL DRAWING AND PAINTING
Campers will learn to draw and paint their favorite animals from dogs and cats to icky toads and snakes through the use of color, shading, composition, and perspective. In this workshop campers will utilize colored pencils, markers, and blending stubs.....sponging, spattering, and soft wash techniques to produce a series of masterpieces as they create animals in a whole new light.

CHARCOAL SKETCHING
In this workshop campers will learn to draw and shade with charcoal sticks and charcoal pencils. They will learn to understand light, shadow, and volume in this traditional technique used by the masters. This is a great class for loosening their drawing skills.

SCULPEY CREATIONS
Have a great time learning how to use this pliable clay to create your favorite animals and cartoon characters. You will paint your creations with acrylics. This is a wonderful and fun class as you learn how to transfer your 2D drawings to 3D sculptures.

AFRICAN EMBROIDERY
Experience Africa by learning about the history and culture of the Ndebele Tribe in South Africa. Using colorful African threads and beads against a black background, students embroider images of Ndebele life as they learn about the lifestyle and customs of this fascinating culture and community. Students chose designs of African Lions, Elephants or Giraffes, and will learn Chain Stitch, French Knots and beadwork.

MUMMIES OF EGYPT
For thousands of years, Egyptians were ceremoniously enshrined and their stories told through elaborate art surrounding their mummies. Each camper will create an ancient Egyptian, we’ll weave their life story, imagine how they looked, and what they did during their lifetime. We’ll go through the mummification process with papier-mâché, and paint a sarcophagus that tells their story. Campers can travel back to ancient times to a land of mystery and beauty in this class.

NATIVE ARTS OF MEXICO
Mexico has a combination of many different influences to its native arts. From the Caribbean flavor of the tropical masks of Veracruz, the Mayan storytelling art of their stellas, the painted gourds of the Pacific Coast, and the storytelling yarn paintings and bead art of the Huichol Indians. All display the vibrant colors and rich textures of this beautiful country. Join our summer Fiesta de Artistas!

NATIVE AMERICAN ARTS
The lives of the Native Americans of the southwest were captured in their artwork, which features the resources of the land, and how they used them. Gain some insight into Native American cultures by working on some projects inspired by traditional crafts. Campers will use natural inspirations to make Hopi Kachina dancing figures, Rainsticks, rattles, and weave Dreamcatchers at our Valley Village campus and Plains Indian beaded pouch, Haida totem poles and Plains Indians beaded bags at our Agoura Campus. Each project will tell the story of this great culture, and how they used these items in their everyday life.

WOODWORKING*
In collaboration with Side Street Projects, this workshop teaches students the safe and effective use of hand tools through hands-on experience. These workshops are held in brightly-colored "mobile" studios that house 10 woodworking stations custom made for children 6-11. Each station is equipped with hand-tools, adjustable workbenches, supplies and materials: everything needed to create dozens of woodworking projects that increase in complexity as students develop their creative problem solving skills.

CREATIONS IN CLAY
In this ceramic workshop we will study the styles of well known artists and then create our own unique variations in clay. Henry Moore, Georgia Okeefe, and Alexander Caulder are just a few of the artists that will be our inspiration as we create wonderful projects. At our Valley Village campus our projects will be inspired by studying the Arts of Asia along with examining several well known American and European Artists. SCRAPBOOKING
Learn the basics of scrapbooking and the tools used to complete many different pages. Using decorative scissors, stickers, paper and more, we will create a variety of pages to ensure a lifetime of memories. Topics covered include cropping, mounting, creative lettering, designing a layout, matching colors and journaling. The workshop atmosphere is very fun and relaxed with music in the background and everyone chatting about their happy memories. Students will use approximately 3-5 photos each day so start taking pictures now and be sure to bring them on the first day of class.

PUPPETS AND PLAYS
Campers will organize an entire puppet production in this class. They will start by writing a play, then design a stage and make a variety of puppets and props in order for them to act out their story. Lots of room for imagination, creativity and practical planning as they put all this together in either the hand or shadow puppet format they have chosen for themselves.

Take a leap back in time and see what kids did to build their skills and pass the time long ago. We will try our hand at making a sampler, whittling, making rope and the like. ART IN THE GARDEN
Nature is an open canvas as we design growing art creations to take home. Gardening can be a lifelong hobby, when you develop a connection to the natural world outside your home. Students will learn how different plants develop and grow by tending our garden of planted seeds and rooted cuttings, as well as feeding the hummingbirds in the neighborhood. We’ll plant a water garden, work with dried and pressed flowers, and have a tea party of various herbs grown in our garden. Kids will find the art of gardening, as well as art in the garden in this workshop!

DECOUPAGE
Decoupage is a basic technique using paper, fabric or natural materials that can be applied to a wide variety of objects. Mix it with a little creativity and patience and the end result is a good time spent making something special. You can make a scene of the African grasslands with decoupage, make a beaded egg, and transform a laundry detergent box into a useful tote. Whether you have done decoupage before or not, this is a great workshop.

SPOOL KNITTING
This is a great introduction for campers into the fulfilling world of knitting. Workshop participants will learn how to work with yarn by finger knitting and spool knitting to create a few fun projects. Possibilities include making finger puppets, hair scrunchees, stuffed animals, hats, doll clothes, headbands and friendship bracelets. Lots of fun to be had knitting and chatting with summer camp friends in this course.

QUILTING
Learn this timeless art of piecing fabric together to make new designs. You will see how this art form has transcended time to become a modern way to express yourself. We will learn several different techniques to make quilt blocks. You will learn about the different types of batting (the stuff that goes inside) and backing fabrics. The final project of a lap quilt will show off the things you have learned.

PAPERCRAFTING
The Chinese really did a wonderful thing when they invented paper. In this workshop, we will learn some decorative ways to turn paper into art with a quilling, iris folding and paper piercing project. Paper goes from being something very ordinary to being something beautiful in our hands.

FABRIC ART: FIBER AND BEAD FUSION
Learn how to combine, stitch, and embellish an African Folklore Embroidery design with a selection of fabrics and beads. You will have a choice of over ten different designs from which to choose: animals, flowers, village scenes or sea life. Campers will learn how to do basic stitching, individual application of beads, incorporating strings of beads, necklaces and other fibers, textures into the design. The end result is a true fiber art that at a later stage can be made into a purse or pillow. Leora Raikin, instructor for this class has exhibited her work at museums and fiber art shows across the country. MYSTERY RADIO: THE SHADOW KNOWS!
“Hidden in the heart of men, is what the Shadow knows! Relive the beginning of the live broadcasted theatrical production of a story. Loosely based upon “A Prairie Home Companion “, the students will have a chance to relive one of the oldest forms of entertainment. Radio styled shows were once popular back in the 1940’s. They will get to write their own script, design the stage, acquire proper props and sound effects for the show and thus perform it as old time story tellers use to do on a stage and being broadcasted to other areas.

TREASURE PIRATES
Aaaaaaaargh! Have ye ever dreamt of becoming an actual Pirate of the 7 1/2 seas? Well here be ye chance mateys! Ye be joining Mystery Mike (aka: Captain Big Mouth) where ye be learning all ye need to be making ye one of the greatest pirates of all time. You'll learn to walk, talk and of course 'sing' like a pirate. There be 'plank walking' as well other "Pirate Games" that we be playing on the ship. And ye also be creating ye very own Pirate "name" that works for you (keep in mind, it's always 3 words ie: Captain Big Mouth...Captain Blue Beard, etc...)Ye also will be learning how to navigate through the waters and how the Pirates of the past did this too. And you'll be learning the real history of the Pirates of the past. Did ye be knowing that Pirates used dolphins, turtles and albatross' (a really big bird) to find their way to their treasures along with their compass? Ye be learning how to use a compass, create your own treasure maps and build your own treasure chest to fill on an actual Treasure Hunt at the end of the course with all kinds of Pirate Treasure. The only course requirement is that ye must speak Pirate (ye will be taught if ye don't know how) and have a desire to find treasure wherever you go. Aaaaaaaaargh! SECRET AGENT TRAINING
Learn to be a Secret Agent with Mystery Mike, the most famous goofy, wacky Secret Agent known by children all over the country. Join Mystery Mike as he takes you through the actual process with Spy Challenges, Map Making, Various Disguises, Spy Gadgets, Learning Accents, learning to create and decipher secret codes, clue writing and more. The course ends with a campus Scavenger Hunt that the children put together themselves using all of their 'Agent' training throughout the course. Each child also receives a 'dossier' at the end that includes digital photos of themselves from the course, an official 'Spy Certification' as well as some other 'mysterious' surprises.Looking foward to helping you 'find a clue' to become a great Secret Agent.

In this workshop our campers will experience music from the rainforests around the world with real folk instruments. EN GUARD! FENCING
Touche! This workshop will introduce students to the ancient, elegant sport of Epee fencing, in which opponents salute, go on guard and sustain an intense yet graceful dialogue through their gestures and weapons. Classes will cover footwork, blade work, strategy, training drills and exercises. Beginning fencers will parrie, thrust, lunge and bout, while learning the etiquette and the strategies of this fun, safe sport.

Learn the sport of cheer. Be a Cheer Squad member on this year's Summer Art Academy roster. YOGAWORKS
In this workshop, we’ll explore and discover the mind and body in inspiring, creative ways. Through animated poses, basic stretching and movement exercises, you’ll gain strength, flexibility, coordination and body awareness. Breathing and visualization techniques will teach you how to concentrate, relax and focus inward. The aim of the workshop is to stimulate the imagination, promote creative self-expression, instill self-respect and respect for others, and release energy. A typical class includes Breath Awareness, Sun Salutations, Standing and Sitting Poses, Stretching, and Relaxation. The integration of art, yoga games, and music add to the fun and adventure of this ancient practice. At our new Agoura Hills campus, this workshop will be taught by accredited instructors from YOGAWORKS of Westlake Village, one of the nation's leading Yoga centers.

Capoeira is a Brazilian dance-martial art, developed by slaves to fight the oppression of their masters.  Capoeira is the perfect balance between self-defense and rhythm.  In this workshop, our students will develop their flexibility, confidence, cardio-vascular endurance, range of motion, rhythm, awareness of themselves and others and will have a great time doing it!  This workshop incorporates learning different Brazilian percussion instruments, singing, acrobatics, and fight-like moves ending with a performance at the end of the session.

MARTIAL ARTS - TANG SOO DO
Tang Soo Do is a style of Korean martial arts, or karate, which is the study of self defense with a weapon-less hand.  In this workshop, our students will enjoy taking karate, which can be applied to many areas in life including self dicipline and self control, goal achievement, mental clarity and above all else the confidence to over come any situation one desires!  Our program will include, but is not limited to, the learning of basic kicks, punches, blocks and stances, a form (also known as a kata), attacking combinations, and karate games designed to be extremely fun while focusing on needed aspects such as hand-eye coordination and balance.  This workshop will use positive reinforcement to motivate and connect with children so that this program becomes a fun, safe, and highly beneficial environment.  There will be a performance, by all of the children attending this workshop, at the end of the session giving them a chance to show off their newly discovered martial arts talents! ASIAN CUISINE
Our culinary journey will begin with a visit to the distinct cuisines of Northern and Southern Thailand, which will feature recipes from world famous Chef Tommy Tang like Chiang Mai Thai (small bites) plus the noodle and curry dishes from Bangkok. From China we will do Dim-Sum and them some…recipes include wontons, potstickers, shu mai, and stir fry techniques. Our Korean menu will include bulgogi and short ribs. Japan will feature udon noodle soup, sushi tricks & techniques!

ITALIAN CUISINE
A culinary journey through yummy Italy: This culinary trek will take us from the Island off of the tip of the boot (Sicily) to the top of the boot including the Lombardy and Northernmost region of Trentino that is bordered by the Alps. We will use the fresh fruits and vegetables that vary from region to region. Handmade fresh pasta and pizza dough making, with flavorful sauces and delicious bites of Italy are the feature attractions of this delicious class.

MEXICAN CUISINE
Sadly, too many Americans only taste foundation of Mexican food is that of the fast food franchises that are on every street corner. The cuisine of Mexico is diverse from region to region with complexities and nuances in approaches to delicious food. Not to mention the culinary influences of the Aztec, Mayan, French and Spanish empires throughout the land. This class will feature a Tamale workshop covering different regional wrappers from corn husk and banana leaves and flavorings.

CARTOONING - MONSTERS
Like the classic mad doctors of the movies, we'll be bringing the famous monsters from classic films like FRANKENSTEIN, KING KONG, DRACULA, THE MUMMY, GODZILLA and others to life! We'll learn the secrets of creating the creepy, sketching the scary, and reviving the creatures from the classic Horror and Sci -Fi movies while examining the great Fright films (all PG) of the 30's thru 50's. The work of influential illustrators like Frank Frazetta, Bernie Wrightson, Basil Gogos, Bill Stout, and others will be examined. Don't worry, Mom- no Psycho Slashers, Exorcists, or Gore Hounds allowed. This is a CLASSIC CREATURES ONLY class!

CARTOONING - SUPERHEROES
Before SPIDER-MAN, THE X-MEN and BATMAN were blockbuster summer movies and the TEEN TITANS and the LEGION of SUPERHEROES were TV cartoon shows, those characters were line drawings in comic book stories on paper. These adventurers were rendered with dynamic power and drama that made them seem bigger than life. The basics of drawing dynamic superheroes are revealed by DR. SCOTT as each student makes daily entries into his and her SUPERHERO SKETCHBOOKS. We will also be learning a brief history of SUPERHERO comics and examining the work of great comic book superhero action artists like Jack Kirby, Bruce Timm, and John Buscema.

The Basics! All your favorite funny cartoon characters from today like the SIMPSONS, BUGS BUNNY, SPONGEBOB and ARCHIE, will broken down here as well as the classic cartoons of THE FLINTSTONES, MICKEY MOUSE and PEANUTS. Each student will be completing a day by day cartoon sketchbook full of famous characters rendered in their own hand, so we will be able to see the improvement in drawing technique as the weeks progress.

You think RD-D2 and C3PO were the movies first mechanized marvels? You think the Starship ENTERPRISE was the first cool Sci- Fi spaceship? Not by a long shot! In this class we will not only render popular Sci-Fi Mechanical Men like our favorite STAR WARS droids, but also become familiar w/ classic robots like ROBBY from FORBIDDEN PLANET and spaceships like the DISCOVERY from 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, plus many more. CARTOONING - ANIME’ AND MANGA
Do you wish you knew how to create MANGA (Japanese style comics) like DRAGONBALL Z, NARUTO or HELSING? What about ANIME’ inspired american cartoons like the TEEN TITANS? CARTOONING - SCI-FI ALIENS
They came from outer space and landed on our Movie and TV screens! Some were friendly - some were scary! The invasion began back in the 1950s and I guess they like it here, because they just keep coming! All these classic creatures actually sprung from the imaginations of talented artists and designers, and we’ll discuss what these artisans had in mind and where they drew their inspiration from. The secrets of drawing out -of -this -world creatures are explored by DR. SCOTT as each student makes daily entries into his and her SCI-FI ALIENS SKETCHBOOK. Finally, some basic planetary science will be discussed because all students will design their own alien creatures based on the actual conditions of one of the planets in our own solar system!. We will also see a brief history of Science Fiction Films and examine the Sci-Fi movies of popular directors like George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, as well as the many pioneers that inspired them.

BEGINNING CHESS
Welcome to the game of Chess! Through songs, stories, and games, we introduce chess to students in a fun and exhilarating way. This experience not only teaches them the basic fundamentals and principles of the game, but also helps sharpen memory, develop problem solving skills, and encourage patient reflection as they visual each move before they make it. In this workshop, each lesson will incorporate 'fun facts' about the history of the game, an engaging lesson, and as always, multiple games between classmates. Though emphasis will  be placed on classic strategies to defeat your opponent, it will focus more on creative, adaptable, and intuitive ways to approach the game. We will introduce the game on all levels, including (and not limited to) explaining the parameters of the board itself, piece movement, basic opening moves, and general 'tips' on how to increase your chances of controlling the board. So, if you are ready to learn how to play chess in an exciting environment this workshop is for you!

CHECKMATE
This workshop is geared towards students who already have a strong grasp of chess fundamentals and are looking to learn more developed ideas about the game. We will learn such classic concepts as 'castling,' 'en passant,' the 'rook roller,' as well as strategies to accelerate checkmate if you are close to victory and recommendations to increase stalemate if you are the player at risk. Students in this workshop will be playing classmates who already perform at a more advanced level which in turn will raise their skill level dramatically. Though the stress is not solely focused on competition, this workshop will indeed have more tournament play. However, as in both classes, the focus is first and foremost on sportsmanship, respect, and always having fun. So, if you've played chess for a while and are looking for a more exciting challenge, come and join Checkmate!

ART PHOTOGRAPHY
Combining photography with additional media makes this workshop both educational and fun! We cover all the basics of camera usage, as well as composition, color, light, shape, and texture. Creativity knows no bounds though as we use the photos taken by the kids to compose masterpieces including color added to black and white photos, and Pop Art inspired composites. A good skill for a photographer is knowing how to relate to the lens, so being in front of the camera for a self portrait is always a fun learning experience. Creative presentation is also important, so we’ll put together a display of each student photographer’s work and present them at the final show

In this workshop we will be exploring many things that relate to photographing people including lighting, composition, depth of field and angles of shooting. DIGITAL ORIGAMI
Join us in this workshop as we begin building beautiful paper party lanterns (complete with light!) out of patterns created on the computer and digitally colored.  Very proficient artists who finish their lantern ahead of schedule will color, print, and create origami animals to attach to their lantern, using patterned origami paper. This class is good for beginners and experts alike!
